Stammi Vicino, Non te ne Andare

Most of my pieces are self-explanatory but these illustrations had some thoughts behind them that may not be entirely obvious at first glance. I thought an explanation of intent and thought process (as they mutually influenced each other for the final product) would be warranted. Lofty (and mushy) thoughts follow.

At their base, these are supposed to be a physical representation of their love and how they’ve learned to love. Yuri has learned that he’s allowed to declare his love, that it’s not an inconvenience on others, and there is joy in that freedom. His hand is outstretched as it is in the last pose of his free skate, declaring his love for Victor. Originally both hands were raised but this did not communicate all that he learned. His other hand is pressed to his chest, not as a fist but splayed, fingers open wide, showing that he can love himself and share that love.

Victor is serene in his love. He learned his love through Yuri and echoes the opening of Yuri’s free skate with his hands, the beginning of love, offered with upturned palms, like a prayer, presenting his true self and not a persona. He has serenity knowing he and his love will be treated with reverence.

Both are in layback positions to open the chest, rendering them both vulnerable. It is their show of trusting in their love. Both reach up, signifying their desire to grow and be more, as people, as someone who loves and is loved, higher goals and selves.

The growth of their love has been one of the gentlest and joyous journeys I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. To everyone who worked on the show, I can’t thank you enough. Thank you so very much. It has been an honor.
