The rant: OMG, IT'S DONE?!?! I started this a year ago! But then left it alone. I finally started working on it hardcore at the beginning of the summer... and I worked on it almost every day. I've easily put in 100+ hours on this. Easily. But it came out so good! I love it! But it feels so weird to have it done... So now I have time for commissions again!

The serious: Introducing my two new characters! *drumroll*
Sylverum and Mayze!
Sylverum is the guy with the DO NOT WANT look on his face. He's usually pretty cool, but doesn't like it when Mayze hits on him.
Mayze is the girl (dur) who is totally into good 'ol Sylverum. Not quite noticing the DO NOT WANT vibe there...
Angel girl in the background there is just a bartender. And yes that is Death in the foreground... and yes he has a cell phone. What? Heaven/Hell/Purgatory just stopped progressing with technology in the middle ages? Puh-shaw. They've got technology there.

As for the title... Purgatory isn't a relm... it's a bar... neutral ground where people get to hang out. But it's the oldest and most prestigious bar around. Hence the fancy Gothic architecture.

And no, Sylverum isn't drinking an alcoholic drink... he's on duty... and drinking on duty is a no-no. *tsk tsk tsk*

Thanks a ton to :iconlorddonovan:
He mentored me through this entire picture, and thanks to him, my art stats raised a few levels.

Is it too much to say that I love you? I've never had somebody come back and comment after all this time just because they loved my picture that much. Thank you for making my day that much brighter. :3

I wouldn't mind that kind of purgatory. So long as they have vodka, red whine over 25 years and mojitos.

You got it! They boast awards for the best bar in the tri-province region for a reason! Pretty much whatever you want, they got.

O thanks goodness. That sounds awesome!

I have to remember this isn't a pub called hell, there selection is horrible! And no one can ever get into club heaven, that bouncer is a real hardass.

Psh, those places are so stingy about their customers. Only the locals go there. At least the servers here are nice to everyone~
Geez, Purgatory knows how to do quality AND quantity!

:salute: aye to that :drunk: my friend. The one draw back to the place is that it can get a little quite on a slow day, kind of creepy. But it does live for the weekends!

Yeah, even the best places have their drawbacks. Death doesn't help with his constant sitting in a dark corner. They've asked him to stop doing that, but he never listens.

At least he's always up for a game of cards... well anything involving gambling. I think he needs an intervention. (I didn't say anything)

I never heard a thing. ;)
I'm pretty sure some of the angel waitresses have complained to management already. I think they let him stay because he drums up some business for them with his gambling.

Y'know, I've heard rumors that Death cheats. Like some sleight of hand and weighted dice. Some of the guys are thinking about showing Death who's boss. My money's on Death.

The details is absolutely stunning. The difference in the image sharpness really puts the kicks in this one. Nice work man.

But since this is a neutral area, it should have lesser gloom & more holy feel as well.

One of the things I find amusing is that death is SMSing on his phone.

I find it funny that you associate the gloom more with Hell, because I think of gloom as neutral, but I see your point. X3

I know what it's like to spend this kind of time on something - well, maybe not a year - but almost everything I do is a matter of weeks. Of couse in my case, it's a combination of perfectionism, difficulty focusing, and my use of MS Paint.

Now on to your drawing...

The bar was a brilliant place to put purgatory. The at first glance, I thought he colors looked washed out (like pastels) because this was a typical smoke-filled bar. It was only later that I noticed some things didn't quite fit...the main characters were drawn in full, lively color, the bar maiden was ghostly translucent, and the hand on the lower left was a skeleton.

I also love how expressive and natural the characters look; the facial expressions are the hardest aspect to get right, and the portrayal is seamless here. The tongue-in-cheek way the skeleton hand simply works a cell phone like anyone else would - maybe even better because his fingers are skinny enough for those tiny buttons!

In any case, this is certainly an exemplary piece of work. :worship:

Thank you for your kind words and praise! I learned so much about how to use color with this picture; especially atmospheric perspective. There was so much detail on the walls in the sketch before it got fogged out!

I'm glad you think the expressions came out great since I had a very hard time drawing them. There were little details put in to give light to the fact that this wasn't a normal contemporary bar, nor a classical one; Death and his cellphone was one clue, but there are others, like bendy-straws in the drinks. X3

I feel honored that you took the time to write such an in-depth comment and I commend you on your perseverance with MS Paint! =3
